Monday, September 21st

Parents,

Lots of good information today on our blog!

First, your student has new spelling words in their planner.
Our five new words are: like, him, see, time, could
Our seven review words are: are, from, have, not, there, your, would
We are discussing blends in class this week. Blends are two consonants that are blended together to make a sound. I have added three blend words to our list: clip, blue, drink

I sent home in your student’s folder a math coin homework packet. It is two pages of counting coins practice. This packet is due back Friday morning. If your child wants to do all of it in one night, that is just fine. Or they can spread it out during the week. If he/she wants to turn it in before Friday, feel free to do so. I just ask that all homework is turned in no later than Friday morning. If your child needs help with this, please feel free to help them. We are working every day on counting coins. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns about this work.

I also sent home a fluency practice page. Please have your child read the poem to you using the correct phrasing. You will notice the lines under the words that show what words should be phrased together. Please write the poem name on the reading log and initial showing that your child practiced it along with the book they read, and I will give them two tickets! I will send home a new fluency practice page each week.

Fall pictures will be next Wednesday, September 30th

We have had a great month of school together, and I am enjoying your student so much! Thanks for your help and support! 🙂

Thursday, September 17th

Parents,

Tomorrow morning we will take our first spelling test. Please make sure to study the words one more time tonight so your student will be prepared in the morning. They have done a great job practicing them with me this week.

In math we are counting pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters. Any practice at home is encouraged! Look for coin homework to come home Monday afternoon. It will be due Friday.

Monday, September 14th

Parents,

For the past two weeks in class we have been discussing “good fit” books. We have talked about how to pick out books from our classroom library that are a good fit for each child. What is the purpose for reading the book? Does your child have an interest in the book? Can your child comprehend and understand what they are reading? Do they know most of the words? We even have a song we sing about it! With that said, today was the first day your child was able to pick a book from their book box to bring home to read for homework. Please be patient with your child and with me as we are still working on picking the right books to read. Very soon we will begin our small reading groups and you will see different books coming home then, too.

Tomorrow night is Parent Orientation. It will be in our classroom from 6:00-7:00. I hope to see each of you. There will be some great information about how our classroom works and what your child is doing daily.

New spelling words came home in the planner today. Please be studying these words every night. We will have our first spelling test Friday morning. The spelling words this week are: into, has, more, her, two, they, there, many, to, other.

I hope you have a fabulous evening! 🙂

Reading Logs

Parents,

Forgive me for posting this so late in the day. I just wanted to remind you to look in your child’s folder tonight. We are starting our reading logs. I sent every child home with a book to read tonight. Your child needs to record the date and the title of the book on the reading log. Then please initial the log showing that your child read tonight. As the pink letter states, there is a chance that the book sent home is too hard or too easy for your child. Please be patient with me as I am learning each of my students and assessing their reading levels. Feel free to document on the reading log if the book was too hard or too easy. Thank you for your understanding as we get started with our reading logs and while I am taking time to assess each child so I will know exactly where each one is at this time. If you have any questions, feel free to email or call me. Thank you so much!

Wednesday, August 26th

Parents,

I apologize for sending this so late, but please make sure you checked your child’s folder today. A note on white paper came home with some important information from Mrs. Koonce. You will see that we have Parent Orientation coming up on Tuesday, September 15. I hope you can all attend and hear about our classroom! There was an orange note from me asking you to write me an email or a note about your child. I would love to hear anything that you feel like I would want to know or should know about them! Thank you for doing this for me! I always love reading them!

We have had an outstanding first few days! I am enjoying your child tremendously!

First Day of 2nd Grade!

We had a FANTASTIC first day of school! I am so proud of each of my students, and I loved getting to know them today. I can’t wait to see their smiling faces in the morning!

Parents, you have some homework! Some time before Friday, please open your child’s planner to the 2nd page. Please fill out the “phone” and “address” part of that page. Also, you can see all of the information that your child filled out today.

Please note that our lunch time has changed from previous years! We eat lunch from 11:05-11:35. This first week we are asking that you do not eat lunch with your child so that we can teach cafeteria routines and procedures. We appreciate your understanding with this.

A blue note came home today explain about the planner and folder. Please read over that. Also, please check your child’s planner and initial it. I will check it every morning.

I hope you all get some good rest tonight. I will see you in the morning! You Matter!
